The premier nonprofit, independent home for film journalism in the United States since 1962, Film Comment is dedicated to advancing film culture through critical analysis, in-depth filmmaker interviews, festival coverage, podcasts, live events, and more.

Film Comment was founded under the editorship of Gordon Hitchens, who was followed by editors Richard Corliss, Harlan Jacobson, Richard T. Jameson, Gavin Smith, Nicolas Rapold, and current co-editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute. Past and present contributing writers include Ashley Clark, Manohla Dargis, Raymond Durgnat, Roger Ebert, Manny Farber, Scott Foundas, Molly Haskell, J. Hoberman, Eric Hynes, Kent Jones, Dave Kehr, Nathan Lee, Kathleen Murphy, Sheila O’Malley, Brooks Riley, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Andrew Sarris, Amy Taubin, David Thomson, Amos Vogel, Robin Wood, and many more. The magazine has been published by Film at Lincoln Center since 1974.

In 2026, Film Comment launched a new digital magazine featuring quarterly issues covering the latest developments in cinema along with a searchable online archive of more than 300 print editions spanning seven decades. Learn more about the features of the new site here.

Pitch Guidelines

Film Comment publishes essays, reviews, interviews, reported pieces, and more. Our tastes are wide-ranging—spanning mainstream, arthouse, and avant-garde cinema—but what ties everything we publish together is critical depth and thoughtfulness, and careful attention to how cinema and moving images inform, and are informed by, the world beyond the screen.

We accept pitches on a rolling basis. Please direct all pitches to [email protected]. Your pitch should:

be around 100–250 words
clearly outline your idea and the argument or source that might anchor your thinking
display some of the writing style you’ll plan to bring to the finished piece
make a case for why the piece is relevant now (this may be due to a release, a restoration, a repertory or festival screening, or a news item/cultural development)
explain why it is a fit for Film Comment
say why you are the right candidate for the piece—this may have to do with your access, your expertise/background, or your interests

Some important tips for a successful pitch:

Try to pitch two to three months in advance of your targeted publication date, so we can slot your piece into our calendar.
Please ensure that what you’re pitching is not already covered in Film Comment.
Please ensure that what you’re pitching fits with the tone and ethos of Film Comment. For a sense of the kind of writing we typically publish and if your idea might be a good fit, please review our archive of recently published issues.
Please link to or attach specific samples of your previous writing in your pitch email that best demonstrate your aptitude for the piece.

We are a very small and dedicated team. Despite our best efforts, we cannot always respond individually to every pitch we receive. If you don’t hear back from us within two weeks of writing, feel free to take the pitch elsewhere. If your deadline is shorter than two weeks, please say so in the pitch.
