The premier nonprofit, independent home for film journalism in the United States since 1962, Film Comment is dedicated to advancing film culture through critical analysis, in-depth filmmaker interviews, festival coverage, podcasts, live events, and more.

Film Comment was founded under the editorship of Gordon Hitchens, who was followed by editors Richard Corliss, Harlan Jacobson, Richard T. Jameson, Gavin Smith, Nicolas Rapold, and current co-editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute. Past and present contributing writers include Ashley Clark, Manohla Dargis, Raymond Durgnat, Roger Ebert, Manny Farber, Scott Foundas, Molly Haskell, J. Hoberman, Eric Hynes, Kent Jones, Dave Kehr, Nathan Lee, Kathleen Murphy, Sheila O’Malley, Brooks Riley, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Andrew Sarris, Amy Taubin, David Thomson, Amos Vogel, Robin Wood, and many more. The magazine has been published by Film at Lincoln Center since 1974.

In 2026, Film Comment launched a new digital magazine featuring quarterly issues covering the latest developments in cinema along with a searchable online archive of more than 300 print editions spanning seven decades. Learn more about the features of the new site here.

Pitch Guidelines

Film Comment publishes essays, reviews, interviews, reported pieces, and more. Our tastes are wide-ranging—spanning mainstream, arthouse, and avant-garde cinema—but what ties everything we publish together is critical depth and thoughtfulness, and careful attention to how cinema and moving images inform, and are informed by, the world beyond the screen.

We are a very small and dedicated team. Despite our best efforts, we cannot always respond individually to every pitch we receive. If you don’t hear back from us within two weeks of writing, feel free to take the pitch elsewhere. If your deadline is shorter than two weeks, please say so in the pitch.
