"Woodstock is fucking nothing if you have been at the Midnight Sun Film Festival," documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker famously said about the annual celebration of cinema staged in the north of Finland. The 24 hour fest unspools at the start of summer, when the sun shines as brightly at 4 a.m. as it does at 4 p.m.
Founded by filmmakers Aki and Mika Kaurismaki, the festival is the subject of film historian Peter Von Bagh's Sodankyla Forever. Last night at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Van Bagh (pictured) was on hand to talk with Film Comment editor Gavin Smith.
The Film Comment Selects series continues through March 4th at the Walter Reade theater. More info is available here on FilmLinc.com
